Nicola Samorì has been working for over a decade on the stories of saints and martyrs of the Christian tradition and has made Lucia the cornerstone of his work. As is well known, the Saint is the protector of the eyes, of sight, of vision, concepts that evoke, by antithesis, the themes of darkness and blindness.

In the Mart exhibition, in dialogue with the Caravaggesque representation, there is space for Lucia and other female martyrs and saints, condemned and often forgotten, which constitute the iconographic matrix of Nicola Samorì's work. Tears, incisions and scrapings  made in the heart of the material forcefully bring to the attention of the viewer the image of tortured and stripped bodies in which voices from history echo and mix.

That of Samorì is a contemporary painting that recites classical painting. Through transformations and deconstructions, using undoubtedly modern techniques and decidedly contemporary aesthetics, he brings together visual intelligences distant in time.

Similarly to Bacon, I love the visual texture these pieces seem to hold and create a sense of movement. They also hold elements of the old that really makes me excited to see.

I hold older art (renaissance and romantic era art especially) very dear to my heart, so seeing a modern artist with a flare for using similar imagery but twisted I find highly exciting.

Samori's work inspires me to try and use classical techniques and make them more contemporary by adding elements of abstraction. This is definitely something I want to build into my own practice and enjoyment or art.
