Guim Tió Zarraluki studied Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona.

His pictorial research starts from the interest in the human condition, treated with humour, irony and a strong degree of provocation, reflects on a society full of taboos and submitted to a visual tyranny of television, advertising and of course, magazines Fashion. Tió Zarraluki's work has been shown in different countries, including Taiwan, Italy, Australia, Spain, Morocco, Canada and the United States.

He is a Spanish artist on the art scene since 2010. Guim started out with his Magazine Project, where he’d paint layer after layer over magazine covers until they took on a different form. Since 2014 Guim has been composing more personal, intimate works, exploring and developing his own artistic process. His abstract portraits achieve the right balance between cartoonish and eerie, injected with humour, irony and provocation.

Personally, I find this work fascinating due to its spatial awareness. Everything about the faces makes the viewer uneasy and yet I don't necessarily want to look away. The more you do look however the more wrong and uncanny the faces seem to become.

The characteristics of long necks and oval faces don't help the feelings of unease either, especially with the too large and misshaped eyes which seem to follow the viewer wherever they go.

I want to try and incorporate both the flat colour textures for shading as well as learn from his use of uncanny valley techniques for practical work within my own practice - perhaps combining more hyper realism with the abstract to create further discomfort.
